When it comes to Engl amps, it's always assumed that they deliver extremely high-quality gain. This "smaller" version is no exception. However, compared to Engl's larger "monster" amps, it can deliver significantly more in terms of sound versatility. In principle, it has 2 channels (Clean/Lead) with an optional gain boost, individual gain controls, a shared EQ and presence control, and a clever power scaling function. In the first channel (Clean), you can achieve very good cleans, bluesy tones, jazzy sounds, and even hard rock sounds. Simply turn the gain up (while reducing the master volume) and you have the gain boost option available. The second channel continues where the first one left off. The gain is more than sufficient without being muddy. As you would expect from an Engl amp. It's perfectly suited for bands like AC/DC, Deep Purple, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and the rest of the metal scene. The high-gain sound is not 100% identical to the Engl sound of amps like Powerball or Fireball, but it has a distinctly British character without being muddy (unlike Marshall amps, for example). The sound quality is top-notch. You get the sound you want, and it's of very high quality. The "small" amp is built like a tank and looks very stylish. Even at 20 watts, it's a real powerhouse. Combined with a 4x12 cabinet, it can easily outperform its larger counterparts. It has a good mid-range and also a bit of bass, and it's capable of cutting through a mix. It's suitable for home recording, as a practice amp, and even in small to medium-sized venues. The price, considering that it's handmade in Germany, is justified. Therefore, the amp should last for several years with proper use. Note: The power scaling function can only be used with 8-ohm speakers. I personally use it with a Mesa Boogie Mini Rectifier V30 60-watt amplifier. This is a great combination!
